Student Profiles

Susan ArnoldSusan Arnold

What was your educational and relevant work experience prior to enrolling in the Industrial Hygiene program?

I obtained a Master's of Science in Occupational Hygiene degree in 2004 from the Medical College of Ohio. Prior to entering the PhD program, I had 15 years' experience from product safety, corporate IH and consulting roles.

What made you interested in the field of Industrial Hygiene?

When I began my career I worked as a clinical and forensic toxicologist, analyzing biological samples for organic and inorganic lead in a time when leaded gasoline was still produced.

What made you choose the University of Minnesota?

The School of Public Health has an excellent reputation and the PhD program is structured such that it favors the candidate's success. These factors contributed to my choosing the U, but the greatest determinant was my advisor. His interest and expertise in exposure modeling provided a perfect fit for my interests.

What type of job would you like to find upon completion of the program?

My doctoral research is in a very young field and there is so much more work to be done. I hope to find a position that will support more research in this area. Teaching the Master's of IH students has been a wonderful experience and I hope that my next position also includes the opportunity to teach and mentor graduate students.

What would you say to a student considering the program?

Congratulations, you made a great choice! This is an exciting and important time to be industrial hygiene and your hard work will be abundantly rewarded.

Nicole GryskaNicole Gryska

What was your educational and relevant work experience prior to enrolling in the Industrial Hygiene program?

Prior to enrolling in the Industrial Hygiene, I was working as a Technical Aide with 3M and finishing my Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry from the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities.

What made you interested in the field of Industrial Hygiene?

While working as a Technical Aide at 3M, I had an informational interview with a couple Industrial Hygienists who described what the field of IH was and the IH program at the University of Minnesota. I thought it was an interesting way to blend my interests of science and helping others through improving workers' environment and health.

What made you choose the University of Minnesota?

I chose the U of MN because it was close to home, allowed me to continue working at 3M, and I already had a great experience at the school through my undergraduate career.

What type of job would you like to find upon completion of the program?

I recently began an IH internship at 3M this past January 2014. I would enjoy a full-time position at 3M where I could assist with multiple areas including industrial hygiene, safety, and environmental fields.

What would you say to a student considering the program?

I would encourage them to apply to the U of MN program. I have had a great experience so far and learned a lot about the field from brilliant professors and classmates alike.

Yuan ShaoYuan Shao

What was your educational and relevant work experience prior to enrolling in the Industrial Hygiene program?

I was an environmental impact assessment engineer (EPA consultant) in Beijing, China after getting my Master's degree in Environmental Engineering at the Xi'an Jiaotong University in 2009. During my three years working there, I participated in several projects across different industries in evaluating their environmental feasibility. For example, I had experience on evaluating the electromagnetic levels near 110kV substations as well as the oil mist level in a metal-cutting setting.

What made you interested in the field of Industrial Hygiene?

Being an EPA consultant with an engineering background for several years in China, I had gained experience in anticipating, recognizing, evaluating environmental issues. Meanwhile, it became clear to me that exposure assessment and modeling were the areas that I wanted to focus in. Industrial hygiene (IH) is an exciting field to me and could provide me many job opportunities upon graduation.

What made you choose the University of Minnesota?

Our university is located in the metropolitan area near downtown Minneapolis. The beautiful Mississippi river crosses through our big campus. Meanwhile, the IH program here has always been on the top among the nation. So the University of Minnesota was an ideal place for me to go.

What type of job would you like to find upon completion of the program?

Since our IH program is very rigorous but well-recognized among the nation, the most exciting thing for me is that I may have multiply options upon graduation. For example, on one hand, I believe that the courses and practices I am working on are practical and adequate for me to find a decent job in IH. On the other hand, the research opportunities I am participating in right now could definitely open a window for me to become a PhD student in the future.

What would you say to a student considering the program?

If you love IH and are willing to start your career in this field, the IH program at our university may be your best choice! Here, you will get systematic training via our ABET-accredited program. Here, you will get many internship opportunities from multinational companies, academia and government. Here, you will have chance to work with many great experts on some leading edge research projects. Here, there are many young people like you who are willing to share their experiences with you. Welcome to our IH family!
