Dr. Betsy Buehrer is a Senior Occupational Medicine Physician in the 3M Medical Department. She provides direction and support for 3M's global medical programs and clinical services at 3M locations in the U.S., Asia Pacific and Latin America regions. She began her career at 3M in 2003. Dr. Buehrer is Board Certified in Occupational Medicine. She completed her osteopathic medical degree at North Texas State Health Science Center College of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed her MPH degree at Boston University School of Public Health and Occupational and Environmental Residency at Emory University. She serves on the board of trustees for the Minnesota Osteopathic Medical Society and the American Osteopathic College of Occupational and Preventive Medicine.

Felix Ankel

Dr. Felix Ankel is the executive director of health professional education for HealthPartners Institute for Education and Research. HealthPartners is the largest consumer-governed, non-profit health care organization in the United States. HealthPartners family of care includes five hospitals, a comprehensive system of clinics and a 1,500-physician multispecialty group practice. This system is integrated with the HealthPartners health plan, serving more than 1.4 million medical and dental members. In his leadership role within the Institute, Felix works alongside the executive director of research to promote a culture of continuous learning.

Felix is a former emergency medicine residency director. He is an associate professor of emergency medicine at the University of Minnesota, serves on the board of directors for the Council of Emergency Medicine Residency Directors (CORD) and is co-chair of the 2013 International Conference on Residency Education (ICRE). In 2012, Felix received a Parker J. Palmer Courage to Teach Award winner, given by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). He lectures nationally and internationally on competency-based medical education, value-based education and disruptive educational techniques.

Annually, HealthPartners Institute trains more than 470 residents, 2,000 clinical students and provides continuing education to more than 19,000 participants. The Institute also provides state-of-the-art simulation training, maintains on-site and online medical learning resources for the organization and has pioneered the use of theater in health professional education.

I am privileged to assume the position as Residency Director for the HealthPartners Occupational & Environmental Medicine (OEM) program. I am committed to working with our superb cadre of physicians and residents to maintain and strengthen the reputation of the OEM department and residency program. Our goal is to become a stronger and more academically positioned program over the next 5-10 years. Our relationship with the University of Minnesota School of Public Health & the Midwest Center for Occupational Health and Safety is a vital part of our identity. The opportunity for our residents and staff to collaborate with the academic leadership at the UM-SPH in their training and practice provides a unique podium from which to advance the mission of clinical, occupational, environmental, & preventive health service. Practicums with local corporate exemplars as well as the Minnesota Department of Public Health ensure that our residents are expertly trained.

I am a native of Mason City, Iowa and graduated from St. Olaf College in 1976 with a degree in Literature. I am a 1984 graduate of the University of Minnesota medical school. I completed my Preventive Medicine residency training and MPH degree at the University of Arizona from 1994-1996. I began working at HealthPartners (HP) in 2000 in the Occupational & Environmental Medicine (OEM) department; I was the interim OEM Department Chair 2004-5. I served as the lead for the HP Sports Medicine program within the Department of Orthopedics from 2005-2009. I continued to provide didactic programs for the OEM program from 2010-12 after serving as the CMO of a private medical business. I worked at the University of Minnesota, Department of Orthopedics from 2012-14. I have served on eight international trips with US Alpine Ski Team and US Figure Skating Teams. I participate in masters swimming and Nordic skiing, and live with my wife, Marnie Wells, in South Minneapolis.

Robert Gorman

Robert Gorman, MD, MPH, FACOEM, FACP

Dr. Gorman is board certified in Occupational and Environmental Medicine through the American Board of Preventive Medicine as well as the American Board of Internal Medicine. Dr. Gorman has practiced over 20 years in the Twin Cities and was selected as a Mpls./St. Paul top doctor in 2008, 2011, 2012 and 2014 by his peers. Dr. Gorman’s areas of special interest include treatment of low back pain and upper extremity disorders, injury disability prevention as well as clinical care guideline development and outcomes research.

As Director, Global Health of General Mills, I oversee clinical services at the General Mills Minneapolis campus which provide health care services to their employees there. I also serve as medical consultant to General Mills North America Supply Chain, and perform a number of other medical administration functions for General Mills.

I earned my medical degree from the University of Minnesota, was in the combined Internal Medicine/Occupational Medicine program at University of Minnesota Hospitals, and earned a Masters of Public Health at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health.

I am Board Certified in Occupational Medicine, and have been a fellow of the American College of Occupational Medicine and Environmental Medicine for twelve years, and am currently serving on the Residency Advisory Board of the HealthPartners/University of Minnesota Occupational Medicine Residency.

Since 2001 Alden has been the industrial hygiene manager for Minnesota OSHA Compliance. He began his career as an industrial hygiene field investigator for ten years and has been with Minnesota OSHA for 33 years. He earned his Bachelor's of Science degree in chemical engineering from the University of Minnesota. Alden received his Professional Engineering license in 1986 and is certified in Comprehensive Practice by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene since 1987.

Alden serves on the Industrial Hygiene and the Occupational Health Services Research & Policy Program Advisory Boards at the University of Minnesota and the Occupational Medicine Residency Advisory Committee at HealthPartners.

Neal Holtan, MD, PhD, MPH, is a graduate of the University of Iowa College of Medicine. After medical school, he completed a residency in internal medicine at Hennepin County Medical Center and earned a master's degree in public health from the University of Minnesota. He is certified both by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Preventive Medicine. For more than twenty-five years he has practiced internal medicine and preventive medicine in St. Paul as a staff physician in the Department of Medicine at Regions Hospital where he founded the International Clinic, and at the Saint Paul - Ramsey County Public Health as medical director and tuberculosis physician. He has a private consulting practice in preventive medicine and public health associated with Partnership Continuum, Inc., in Minneapolis. In 1998 with a Bush Medical Fellowship, he began studying the history of medicine, earning a PhD from the University of Minnesota in 2011. He is now working on a book about the history of public health genetics in Minnesota and a study of the birth control movement in Iowa in the 1920s and 30s.

As medical director of Employee Health for Fairview, Dr. Ide provides clinical care to Fairview’s employees with occupational health issues and oversight for the employee health program. This includes supervision of onsite nursing staff, respiratory protection, workers comp case consultation, managing the employee vaccination program and other health related services.

Dr. Ide earned her undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College, her medical degree from the Yale University School of Medicine, and a masters of public health from the University of Minnesota. Dr. Ide completed residency training in emergency medicine at Hennepin County Medical Center followed by 7 years of emergency medicine work prior to a second residency in occupational medicine at Regions Hospital. Dr. Ide is board certified in occupational medicine.

Michael LockheartMike Lockheart, MD, MPH

Dr. Lockheart is a diplomate of the American Board of Preventive Medicine, board certified in Occupational Medicine. He completed his training at the University of Minnesota, summa cum laude in Physiology and Biology, followed by a combined program in Medicine and Public Health, with a graduate studies fellowship in cardiovascular disease and nutritional epidemiology. Following an internship in Family Medicine, he completed the HealthPartners Occupational Medicine Residency. Dr. Lockheart treats patients with health concerns as they relate to work, with an emphasis on disability prevention and functional restoration.

Dr. Shawn Olson is the Assistant Residency Director of the HealthPartners Occupational Medicine Residency Program. He is a graduate of HealthPartners/University of Minnesota Occupational Medicine Residency. He received his MD and MPH from the University of Minnesota. Dr. Olson specializes in the identification and management of occupationally related injuries and disease, occupational toxicology, environmental exposures, negotiation with employees and employers, disability management, as well as occupational regulations and policy.
