A Growing Need for Occupational and Environmental Medicine Physicians
There is a growing need for physicians trained in occupational/environmental medicine. There are around 1000 physicians board-certified in preventive/occupational medicine in the United States. The Institute of Medicine estimates that there is a shortage of from 3000-5000 physicians in this field. Unique opportunities exist for practice in the United States and internationally. The field has distinct skills that combine clinical medicine, preventive medicine and other public health areas and offers a challenging yet rewarding experience.
Jobs exist within the clinical practice setting as well as with government agencies, within academia institutions and within corporations. Salaries are competitive and depend on qualifications, experience and the nature of work responsibilities.
