What was your educational and relevant work experience prior to enrolling in the Industrial Hygiene program?
Prior to enrolling in the Industrial Hygiene, I was working as a Technical Aide with 3M and finishing my Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry from the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities.
What made you interested in the field of Industrial Hygiene?
While working as a Technical Aide at 3M, I had an informational interview with a couple Industrial Hygienists who described what the field of IH was and the IH program at the University of Minnesota. I thought it was an interesting way to blend my interests of science and helping others through improving workers’ environment and health.
What made you choose the University of Minnesota?
I chose the U of MN because it was close to home, allowed me to continue working at 3M, and I already had a great experience at the school through my undergraduate career.
What type of job would you like to find upon completion of the program?
I recently began an IH internship at 3M in January 2014. I would enjoy a full-time position at 3M where I could assist with multiple areas including industrial hygiene, safety, and environmental fields.
What would you say to a student considering the program?
I would encourage them to apply to the U of MN program. I have had a great experience so far and learned a lot about the field from brilliant professors and classmates alike.

What was your educational and relevant work experience prior to enrolling in the Industrial Hygiene program?
I was an environmental impact assessment engineer (EPA consultant) in Beijing, China after getting my Master’s degree in Environmental Engineering at the Xi’an Jiaotong University in 2009. During my three years working there, I participated in several projects across different industries in evaluating their environmental feasibility. For example, I had experience on evaluating the electromagnetic levels near 110kV substations as well as the oil mist level in a metal-cutting setting.
What made you interested in the field of Industrial Hygiene?
Being an EPA consultant with an engineering background for several years in China, I had gained experience in anticipating, recognizing, evaluating environmental issues. Meanwhile, it became clear to me that exposure assessment and modeling were the areas that I wanted to focus in. Industrial hygiene (IH) is an exciting field to me and could provide me many job opportunities upon graduation.
